Susanna Hoffs: If you look up at the sky and you see the moon or the stars glimmering, it reminds you that we’re on a planet and we’re just humans and you need to just have that reset moment.

Matthew David Wilder: You had this reality where you could shift and jump from one platform to another and be in different versions of the same narrative.

Hoffs: The next thing I know, Rick Rubin is producing it.

Wilder: I don't remember what happened after that.

Hoffs: I was like, wow.

•••

Wilder: We were on edge every day. We shot the film in what was essentially a crack motel.

Hoffs: There were two people in the control room who could not see me.

Wilder: You could put any name in there.

Hoffs: It was like anything was possible.

Wilder: Panasonic means “all noises at once,” which is sort of what a schizophrenic experience is like.

•••

Hoffs: Just bending one note over and over and over again until it becomes almost like a loop—a trancelike loop.

Wilder: Now it doesn't count for shit. Now it's just hanging out there in the ether.

Hoffs: You don’t need a photograph.

Wilder: I completely agree.

Hoffs: But that’s hindsight.
