It seems this just isn't a good summer for former "Saturday Night Live" stars. First, Adam Sandler releases "You Don't Mess With The Zohan," an extremely crude and unfunny affair, and now Mike Myers releases "The Love Guru," which very nearly follows the same suit.
With the movie clocking in at 88 minutes, though, don't expect the plot to make much sense. Things are rushed, with some connections and transitions barely explained. And yes, while a little of that should be expected from an SNL comedian's movie, I don't want to be left wondering why characters are doing something if I talk with a friend for two minutes of the movie. Near the end, for instance, Myers gets Roanoke to overcome his intimidation by having two elephants mate on the ice and making him watch. I had been paying attention to the whole movie, and I couldn't figure that one out.
But that shouldn't matter if the characters themselves are funny, right? Yes. Are they? No. Those who don't like racial humor should stay away, as nearly every joke Myers makes is at the expense of Indians or French-Canadians: the goalie, while at a club, sprinted towards the stage when he learned that Celine Dion was performing. The few non-racial jokes are penis jokes. The only funny characters are the hockey announcers, played with a great back-and-forth dynamic by Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan.
