Um, what? Roger Cohen and ... Coldplay?

Too ridiculous for words.

They’re listening to Coldplay down on Wall Street:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

The leverage party’s over for the masters of the universe. Shed a tear. When you trade pieces of paper for other pieces of paper instead of trading them for real things, one day someone wakes up and realizes the paper’s worth nothing. And Lehman Brothers, after 158 years, has gone poof in the night.

We’re witnessing the passing of more than a venerable firm. We’re seeing the death of a culture.

Discussion
  • This is one of the most dumb op-eds I've read in a while (although I'm sure similar ones will be printed in newspapers across the country). The current Wall Street turmoil isn't the death of a culture: it's end of old firms like Lehman and Bear Stearns before that, but new "masters of the universe" will rise from the heap. It's a cleansing of the market, and the smart young men and women who enter the financial field will do fine. Just like the persecution of Michael Milken led to the fall of Drexel nearly 20 years ago, which elicited doom and gloom scenarios from writers like Cohen, Wall Street isn't going to disappear.
