The Euro-Disco Blaxpliotation Build Up To Milli Vanilli

In the 70s a German musician, frustrated with the progress of his career, began a behind-the-scenes orchestration of a side group called Boney M. The man, Franz Farian, did all of the studio work, including vocals, but the live band had four Carribeans and no white German in sight. Lip-synching was widely acknowledged but Boney M became a European hit anyway, so much so that Farian got bored and started Milli Vanilli in the 80s.

Boney M. is approximately 100 times more legit than Milli Vanilli. Boney M. is also 50 times more popular in Eastern Bloc countries. "Painter Man" is a cover of British garage rockers The Creation.
