The Best "Light-Hearted, Kid-Friendly Electronica" of 2008

Music for the January 1st, $14 champagne buzz.

D. Gookin—"Glad I Met You"

This track is a bubbly stand out on the Moodgadget/Ghostly joint compilation album titled The Synchronicity Suite, which apparently comes highly recommended from ITunes(?!). D. Gookin, also known as Mike, layers some blissful synths over the innocuously charming refrain. Meanwhile, the pace sticks to a mid tempo lull capable of inducing some light high-stepping a la R. Kelly's "Step in the Name of Love." The song feels like it can work night or day but probably would be best served as a late night pacifier. It's a sweet one but lucky for you it won't turn your teeth yellow.

PNAU—"Baby (Breakbot Remix)"

This was already a likable song to begin with, but as soon as Paris-based DJ Breakbot put a D.A.N.C.E. style sheen on it, it really took off. The elements to this remix are played-out and yet work wonders—rough edges; Kylie Minogue-baiting background; endearing kids chorus. Of course, some credit should also be bestowed upon the Aussies of PNAU for crafting the original tune. Come January 1st, when you're walking out of a packed bar or club at 5 in the morning soaked in sweat and still buzzing from $14 champagne, this is the song you'll want to listen to on your way home or wherever the fuck you're headed to next.

Discussion
  • Moodgadget is tight. Jakob Alexander really knows what he is doing with that label. Mike is cool, and look for him to be making a concentrated effort to play more shows in Baltimore. Here is a link to a review of the The Synchronicity Suite show they did in Baltimore. The only people that showed up were from a local electronic music message board. http://auralstates.com/2008/10/moodgadget-synchronicity-tour-vs-girl-talk-tour-taking-notes-on-the-underground-and-the-pop.html
