Mea culpa

Wherein I apologize for all of my (recent) musical faux pas, misstatements and ignorance.

After last night’s drunken argument at the bar with some random hipster over what band was on the CD player I feel I need to offer some apologies for my musical ignorance:

1.  Random hipster: You were right, it was My Morning Jacket. After you said Z was one of your favorite albums I should have let it go. But I was a bottle of wine and a few gin and tonics down, so I think you can understand why I said, “No, asshole, it’s the Flaming Lips!” Still, sorry all the same.

2.  Leyla: You were right, “Fat Bottomed Girls” is a Queen song. It’s not from This is Spinal Tap. That’s “Big Bottom.” I’m an idiot. But fuck Queen.

3.  Miranda: My complete ignorance/dismissal of metal is just wrong. I’m sure there are some good metal bands out there, and maybe calling Metallica “sellouts” is just my way of trying to sound way cooler than I really am. Also, Blizzard of Ozz was one of the first CDs I ever bought – I just don’t tell anyone.

4.  Matt, Kayleigh: No, nevermind. I can’t do it. The Decemberists suck. Why are they singing about pirates? I don’t understand. No apology needed. Nerds.

5.  Dad: Alright, I’ll give it to you, Jethro Tull does rock.

6.  Danny, Dave, Gabriel, Lloyd, Jasen, Dana: I don’t get a good 60-70% of your musical references, but I nod and say, “Oh yeah, definitely, definitely.” “Great album.” “Defining song.” etc. I’ll try to keep up better.

  • Uhh Zach, you just stated that Tull was better than Queen. I’m by no means a huge Queen fan, but they shred the hell outa Jethro-fuckin’-flute-worshiping-Hull.

  • Queen sucked, save “Crazy Thing Called Love” and Freddy Mercury’s duet with Bowie on “Under Pressure.” And, you’re right, the Decemberists are among the worst critically acclaimed bands of the last five years. Ridiculous lyrics and a snotty demeanor.

  • Is there not something endearing about an impossibly gay individual singing about big lady asses? http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=queen+fat+bottomed&www_google_domain=www.google.com&hl=en&emb=0&aq=f&aq=0&oq=queen+fat+bo# I’ll get on my bike and ride, Freddy.

  • For every semi-rocking “Tie Your Mother Down”-type track, this most overrated of bands had a handful of saccharine garbage. Absolutely. Terrible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdoZEmiNXJY

  • Alright, alright. Points all taken/agreed with. Let me clarify and let it be known that I’m not a Queen fanboy by any stretch of the imagination. I just happen to think they’re better than Tull.

  • I didn’t even say I like Tull. Just that they rock. Which... they do. Dude did for rock flute what Jean Luc Ponty did for rock violin.

  • Listen, man: you used to like The Decemberists just as much as I did. Their first two albums have some excellent shit. It falls off a bit after that, and in all likelihood their next record is going to suck. But listen: we played “As I Rise” drunk together more times than I can remember, and there’s no denying that.

  • Kind of a specific remark, but does anyone else share my opinion that a large part of the Decemberists’ sound is simply a carbon copy of Neutral Milk Hotel’s sound on songs like ‘Two Headed Boy’? The NMH song ‘Holland, 1945’ even has that same nerdy historical thing that The Decemberists have..

  • There are definite influences but I will give Colin credit that he has his own thing going on lyrically, pretty distinct from Jeff Mangum. Colin’s a much more straightforward story-song guy -- just about pirates and stuff. Also I wouldn’t call anything off In the Aeroplane Over the Sea “nerdy historical.”

  • I agree with you on all of those bands except Jethro Tull. They’re really getting a bad rap here, there not that bad. They have some pretty decent pop songs. “Bungle in the Jungle” and “Aqualung” are good tracks.

  • Oh man, thanks for reminding me about “Bungle in the Jungle,” one of the great novelty songs. Don’t like Tull, but the lyrics of that song still crack me up.

  • Please, Please!! Your Dad and I were listening to Jethro Tull way before any of you were a “glimmer in anyone’s eye”. I really have to laugh when I hear a band that has been around FOREVER being critiqued/criticized years after they made some really great music..... And you are right Matt - he did use to LOVE the Decemberists!!! That’s all he listened to for months!!! while his Dad and I just rolled our eyes. But we have also been introduced to some mighty fine music that we would not have heard otherwise.
