A Question For You Hip Hop Heads

Is it emulation, theft, ripping off, or all three?

Can someone explain to me why there's no mention of Joe Mansfield when discussing this DJ Premier classic? Here's Nas's "Memory Lane (Sittin' in da Park)," off 1994's iconic Illmatic (produced by DJ Premier):

And here's Scientifik's "I Ain't the Damned One," off 1992's The Most Blunted (produced by Joe Mansfield):

Not a lot of room for doubt.

  • they used the same sample? so what? i heard a t-rock song the other day the other day that used the horns from "make the road by walking." does that mean the producer ripped off jay-z's "roc boys." no, they just sampled the menahan street band.

  • Well true, a sample is a sample. But the foundation on each track is Reuben Wilson's "We're in Love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU8idhis408) which, while certainly recognizable, needed a good amount of retuning-- that was done in the exact same way. Also note how many people credit DJ Premier for flipping this specific track on that youtube page. Bottom line is, Nas and DJ Premier are legendary, while Scientifik committed suicide in '96 and Mansfield is still trying to get his name out there. Just seems pretty unfortunate.
